Book Review: Converting Auto Engines for Experimental Aircraft , Finch by
Paul
A little good information but mainly cheerleading
At one time, it was thought that auto engines were for cars, boat
engines were for boats, and airplane engines were for airplanes.
Eventually, Gardner diesel and Miller/Offenhauser racing marine
engines wound up in vehicles, Liberty, Napier Lion,...

Double covering fabric covered wings by
[email protected]
I just found out about a method being used by some experimenters to
cover their wings that is intriguing. They are literally covering the
wings twice with fabric.
The technique involves covering the wing initially with a heavy grade
fabric, taughten it with the iron as specified, apply the rib...

UV Smooth Prime by
Doug Palmer
OK the rumors about UVSP have me paranoid now. I know some folks have had
nightmarish problems with this product but I am hopeing that there are some
success stories out there as well as it is still on the market. I have been
using UVSP on my project during the build and now extensively during...

Hinges under stress - mechanical engineering type question by
Corrie
Thinking about a hinge like this (end view): ____(O)____ where "___"
is the plate, "( )" is the barrel, and "O" is the hinge pin. It would
be bolted through the plates to the surface below. The barrel sits
"on top" of the plates. Hope that makes sense.
It's in tension and/or compression (some...

Metallic paint and composite antenna signal strength by
firstflight
Will a metallic paint interfere with the strength of signal with impeded
antennas in a composite airplane? I have a small transponder antenna and a
Comm antenna bonded to the inside of the fuselage. Will a metallic paint
and the presence of aluminum chips screw up the strength of signal in...

Doug Fir vs: Sitka Spruce by
Lou Parker
Can anyone tell me the truth? When I read articles about the
difference between the two woods, the information says that fir is 23%
stronger than spruce. When I talk to people they say only 10%. Anyone
got a handle on this?

Lowest cost per mile flown motor- 2 stroke by
Bruce A. Frank
In theory the lead provides lubrication, but in application it causes
sticking and burned valves from un-even deposits on the sealing surfaces
of the valve and seat. Now if you have rotators on the valves there
might be a different story. With the materials used in valves and valve
seats, even ...

Metal, low-wing, plansbuilt by
Oliver Arend
I'm looking into educating myself about metal aircraft construction by
getting a set of plans for a low-wing airplane. The idea is then to
either design my own plane (no, looking at the plans is not the full
education, there's also a master's degree in aerospace engineering,
I'm more looking for...

A question on Airworthiness Inspection by
Dave S
Ok.. I have a real problem with what you just described. An AC, by the
FAA's own definition, is considered an ACCEPTABLE means of compliance,
but not the ONLY means of compliance with the rule. So if the AC says
its acceptable, then there is no basis for it to be rejected solely on
those...

AV gas prices by
Stuart & Kathryn Fields
Well it has happened. Local 100LL is $5.60/ gal and is not expected to
decrease. Is there anyone out there using Supreme MoGas in a Lycoming 0320
with 8.5:1 compression? If so what ignition timing changes were needed if
any?
thanks

"Whiskey" for compass? by
dale
Anybody got a replacement for the kerosene looking fluid in the whiskey
compass? It evaporates or leaks over the period of a year with no outside
evidence of a leak. The compass has new gaskets. Interested in something a
little thicker.

Pitts Screw Question by
VTflyer
I was planning on purchasing the Aircraft Spruce S2A hardware kit for an
S1C. I wanted to check and see if the sheet metal on the S2A is held
together with 10-32 screws as it is on my aircraft, a quick yes or no would
be all I need.
Thanks!

Modifying Vision plans for retractable gear... by
Chris
Dear All:
I am researching various options for a homebuilt aircraft. I am
located in Thailand, and over here labor is significantly more
obtainable than money, so cost is definitely a primary concern. Build
time can always be compensated for by enlisting help. Based on what I
want, it appears that...
