Bush Sr's Gulfstream crash... by Dave S
So far, nobody has made mention of this incident in the newsgroups I frequent so thought I would give it mention. I'm sure its gotten national coverage. At approx 6:23 AM CST a Gulstream 1159a (formerly a G3 I think) impacted the ground about 6-7 miles SW of Hobby airport as it was on approach for...

TSA and Thanksgiving by Capt.Doug
With all the ranting about TSA, most of it deserved, I thought ya'll might want to hear something nice for Thanksgiving. It was a random act of kindness in a city not known for such things. I was sitting in the cockpit for an O'dark:30 morning departure. Boarding was about half-way done. A gate...

"Clear Prop!" in Mandarin by Darkstar
Any zhongwen speaking ppl over here? How do you call out "Clear prop!" in Mandarin when you mean "Keep away from the prop -- I'm starting the engine." Used as a standard phrase when flying small planes (Cessna, YAK, etc). Don't ask me why I need this. I do! It's a principle! :-)

Carrying flight gear on the airlines by Peter MacPherson
I'm helping a friend move his plane down to Florida for the winter and will be flying back on the airlines. Since I'll be bringing my flight gear(headset, handheld radio, GPS, flight bag, etc..), is there anything that I should avoid bringing so the TSA doesn't finish their Christmas shopping with...

More OT by Franklin Newton
I see TSA is in the news again, that's, Tit Squeezers of America, seems more females simply don't like being felt up. Makes ya wonder what would be going on if the Russkys had said those folks had hidden their explosives internally.

Non Standard ATC Phraseology by In Soo
Hi pilots, I am new to the group and wanted to see if you guys hear Non-standard ATC phraseology around places where you fly. Our tower at Chander, AZ usually request us to report 2 mile base when entering a traffic pattern. I thought the standard pattern entry was 45 to downwind or final. If you...

Unporting? by Bob Chilcoat
I was reading Gann's "Fate is the Hunter" again the other day, and was curious about the incident in the last chapter where he unintentionally and naively avoided disaster by NOT slowing down when the DC-4 he was flying from Hawaii to Burbank developed an unexplained occasional...

Forward thrust Q by Ramapriya
Hi again, I have for a colleague a 30-yr old former Air Canada 737 pilot who doesn't take too kindly to questions of my kind :( When I asked him recently about how forward thrust happens, he said that the engine blades simply turn the other direction. With nothing to back up my hunch, I still...
