IFR flight Sunday by
John Clonts
I flew up to Abilene (ktpl-kabi-ktpl) to pick up my daughter Sunday...
I took off at about 4 into 200 and 1 1/2. I had gotten there early
and planned to do a couple of approaches before I left, but I decided
to go ahead and top off (had about 3.5 hours in the tanks), and there
were a couple of...

GPS approach step-down fixes by
Julian Scarfe
As far as I can see, step-down fixes on GPS approaches are always defined by
a distance to the threshold. Are there exceptions?
Do GPS approaches exist with waypoints (forming part of the approach
sequence) between the FAF and the runway threshold waypoint? Or is it
guaranteed that after passing...

Instrument rated? by
Greg Siemon
Are you instrument rated?
.. Are you tired of paying for instrument procedures you don't use?
.. Would you like to develop your own custom library of procedures?
.. Would you like to update your library automatically and unattended?
.. Would you like hands free Duat access for weather and filing...

Dual Vac (Pressure) failure in IMC, Night, yikes. by
Victor J. Osborne, Jr.
I think I just got my money's worth of the Beech Proficient Pilot Program.
(BPPP)
Last week, 3 of us where trying to get to Kissimmee from TN but Florida was
closed off due to a line of severe thundershowers across the state. Waited
in Waycross (great FBO, btw) then set off at 9pm into the night...

Let's Be Honest by
skym
I have a recently installed Garmin GPS430. But I also have a Lowrance
(handheld) 1000 GPS to use. The Lowrance is MUCH better at situational
awareness than the panelmount. Please understand--I have no complaints
about the 430; it is a great unit. However, the Lowrance 1000 is a
very, very nice...

Would this AI work ? by
Scott Moore
This appeared in the latest issue of AOPA Pilot:
http://www.bluemountainavionics.com/elitemain.php
Its an all electronic ADI with EFIS display. They say they are
currently engaged in certification. What do you guys think about
the prospects for use as a primary AI for a standard airplane like
my...

Why no stepdown fix in GPS? by
Roy Smith
I flew the KFWN VOR or GPS-A (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0506/05412VGA.PDF)
this morning with a CNX-80. Annoyingly, ANKLE (the stepdown fix) is not in
the database. You get SAX-MAGLV. It seems like SAX-ANKLE-MAGLV would
make a lot more sense. Is the some reason it's left out of the database?

Getting unlost (was Training Q - Is this appropriate) by
K. Ari Krupnikov
vincent p. norris writes:
I passed my private in 2000. Haven't had any problems with pilotage
since (dead reckoning is another matter. I figure if I need to use
dead reckoning, I need to file IFR).
Meaning no offense, Ari, I'm puzzled by that response.
A number of...

Embarrassing approach snafu by
Dan Luke
Getting mixed up about runways and airports can happen easily, as Roy's post
shows, and it happened to me Friday.
I was picking up an Angel Flight patient at Jacksonville Craig (CRG). The
weather was VMC, I already new from a NOTAM that 14/32 was closed, and the
ATIS was advertising visuals to...

Instrument PTS vs. GPS AFM -- who wins? by
Roy Smith
I just noticed an interesting problem with the Instrument Rating PTS. It
says:
Aircraft and Equipment Required for the Practical Test
GPS equipment must contain the current database.
The problem is that not all GPS units require that the database be current.
The CNX-80 AFM Supplement...

Garmin iQue 3600a -- sunlight screen readability? by
Chuck
Folks,
I'M about to start flying again, and so am giving the 3600a a serious
look! I currently have one of the original 3600, which is nearly
invisible when outdoors.
I notice that the 3600a now has a transflective TFT, and so I'm hoping
that somebody has tried it and can comment on how visible...

IFR reading by
Paul Folbrecht
Am finishing up Machado's exellent Instrument Flying Handbook now.
Really enjoyed that - lots of good stuff on approaches (especially) that
you don't get in the training materials.
So, what else is must reading for the newly-minted IFR pilot??
Thanks for all the replies on the staying-current...

GPS PRN NOTAM by
Ali Ghorashi
Hello All,
What does the following NOTAM mean:
GPS 02/001 GPS PRN 26 OTS WEF 0502082100-0502090900
I know it says "GPS Pseudo Random Noise 26 Out of Service" but what are its
implications? Does it mean that RAIM is not available during the outage?
Thanks,

GNS480 database updates by
Dave Butler
Another GNS480 related question.
I've emailed Jeppesen and looked on their website, but the website is
inscrutable and they haven't responded to my email yet.
What's the mechanism for getting database updates on the GNS480? Is it their
Skybound II process? Does it work OK?
What's the database...

Proposal: use OT (off topic) by
Scott Moore
Please I would like to propose:
Off topic posters please include OT at the front of your message. Some
of us want to talk about IFR here, since, after all, that is the subject
of the group. And I would like to filter out the off topic posts.
Please. If you respect this group.

Terrain-Aware Handheld vs. IFR GPS? by
C Kingsbury
OK, here's a new take on an old debate:
I fly a 172 with 2 good NAV/COMs, an M1 Loran and a flaky ADF in the
Northeast US. Since everything up here is airways and most of the fields I
go to have an ILS or LOC approach, this is enough to get away with on most
of the flights I take. This is the...
