best glide speed of a warrior by
d&tm
the best glide speed of a warrior is quoted as 73 kts. but best glide should
be at best lift /drag ratio which I recall is at about 4 degree angle of
attack. But this must be a function of weight. So my questions are what
weight is the 73 kts based on ? and how much does this best speed change...

Biometric I.D.s by
Andrew Tubbiolo
Hey All:
So it looks like we are all going to get fingerprinted, iris
scanned, and who know what else. Is this news to anybody? How
much opposition is there to the new ID requrements? What do you
folks think and feel?
I'm creeped out. I think our country is being taken over by a
bunch of paranoid...

Mooney Engine Problems in Flight by
Paul Smedshammer
This is a bit long winded but I'm looking for qualified opinions as to what
might have happed to an almost total loss of power while in cruise flight in
my Mooney M20F. Here is the story of what happened:
I was flying from Turlock (south of Modesto) to Petaluma (north of San
Francisco) on a...

AOPA Real Time Flight Planner Question by
Casey Wilson
How can I enter a user waypoint in the form of radial and distance? For
example: 10 NM from XYZ(VOR) on the 265 radial. Sure, I can use the
rubber-band feature and drag a waypoint to that approximate position but I'm
looking for something a little more positive. In DUATS you identify it on
the...

Look Both Ways Before You Cross... by
Marco Leon
"Clear left, clear right." I say it everytime I cross a runway during taxi.
Today was the first time in four years that I saw an aircraft on short
final. I held short and called ground half-expecting the controller to say
that he was a low approach on the ILS. "Ummm well, he shouldn't be there."
At...

Garmin 430 and Comm Strength - Solved! by
Marco Leon
There have been various posts going back a ways on the comm "strength" of
the GNS430 versus other radios. I've "solved" my particular problem by
adjusting the mic gain on the unit itself. I've had various "complaints"
about my carrier strength over the years with various ATC facilities so I
was...

Precision Landings and practice by
[email protected]
As a segue from off airport landings....how about precision? Can you
consistently touch down at minimum speed with your regular aircraft
within a 50' mark? Can you do it with a short/soft/XW/ Obstacle? Can
you do it with any configuration of flaps and or power?
OK....got an electrical failure that...

Thank you -- the regulars. by

I am a long time lurker and really enjoy reading the r.a.p and r.a.s
groups. It always amazes me how nice the regular contributors are.
I got my certificate in 1999. I have learned a lot from the posters
here and just wanted to thank everyone collectively.
There is no other forum where trolls get...

Letter at end of flight number? by
Laura
I'm tracking a flight tonight between Boston and Paris. The plane was
delayed on the earlier flight leaving Paris, so of course BOS-CDG is
delayed too. But here's something strange: It seems that the original
flight number was cancelled and a new flight plan was filed with a
letter suffix. So...

Our Landing in Meigs Field, four year ago... by
ThomasH
We saw recently in AOPA news that FAA filed at last some punitive
fines against the City of Chicago for the so unorthodox method of
damaging and closing the airport. This jared our memories, mine
and of my friend, with whom we once traveled across the continent
from California to Oshkosh.

FIGHTING TERRORISM 101 by

FIGHTING TERRORISM 101
Winning a battle abroad is no substitute for losing the war at home yet that`s
exactly what`s happening. We`ve won battles in Afghanistan and Iraq while
terrorists are sneaking into our country through minimally protected borders.
This is akin to living in a high crime...

Flight Times by
[email protected]
I really don't know anything about flying, and at times am terrified on
a commercial airliner (something about turbulence...)
Anyway, I do enjoy flight sims and would like to work through the
FS2004 training and then move onto X-Plane. I know this isn't
realistic, but I will have a better...

Radio 'altercation' with ATC by
[email protected]
Howdy,
I was interested in some other pilots' 'takes' on the following. I was
up with a student a few days ago, when another CFI I know (flying out
of the same airport I do) also with a student had an issue with an air
traffic controller. We were both flying out of airport A, which is...

I want to buy a plane by year-end but they're not making it easy. by
T.Roger
I don't have my ticket yet -- and I'm really committed because I want to buy
my own plane to train and fly -- and I want to take advantage of the tax
write-off about to expire at year end.
I've been at this since August.
But, hell, they're not making it easy.
All I've asked of Cirrus, Piper and...

Aerial Photographs/Aerial Patrols by
[email protected]
As is common in the industry, our electric utility performs regularly
scheduled air patrols. Our aerial contractors are looking for so
called "danger trees" that could come in contact with the lines,
right of way encroachments, and facility maintenance items.
We're using both fixed wing and...
