AOPA Flight Planner - Microsoft only? by
Andrew Gideon
I tried to go to the AOPA Flight Planning web page today, and found that the
only option remaining is to download a Microsoft-only application. This
seems annoying.
Sure, I was able to go directly to the duat web site, and it was fine. But
I'm a member of AOPA, and they've eliminated a benefit...

Two 14 year old boys steal plane and then crash by
John Doe
More great press for GA airport security.
//////////
Two 14-year-old boys from Big Bear are doing OK tonight. Police say they
suffered minor injuries after stealing an airplane from the Big Bear Airport
and crash-landing it in Joshua Tree National Park last night.
The boys' apparent joy-ride...

Laser beams being aimed at airliners? by
Corky Scott
Has anyone been following the disturbing (to me anyway) news stories
about airliners approaching to land being hit with laser beams aimed
at the cockpits?
One pilot reported having his eyes temporarily damaged.
The FBI appears concerned because the beams are apparently tracking
the airliners,...

Illegal immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter,
forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks

Fuel tank balance by
Mxsmanic
Is there any reason to drain fuel tanks in any way other than
symmetrically in normal flight? I notice that most aircraft have
complex controls for fuel flow from the tanks, and I wonder if there
are things one is suppposed to do during normal flight, or if this is
just to provide for possible...

OT - Video Card Question(s) by
Jay Honeck
Okay, this thread isn't totally off-topic, as my questions are related
to making the piloting experience more real in the sim. It's time to
upgrade the Kiwi!
(See it he http://alexisparkinn.com/the_kiwi_is_born.htm ).
I want to add a second monitor (dedicated for the panel), and use the

Airspeed of military planes by
Tetsuji Rai
Airspeed limitation below 10000ft is usually 250kts unless you have been
authorized by the Administrator. However I guess it's a bit slow for
military fighters. So I am curious how fast military fighters fly in the
real world. I guess it's very dangerous military aircraft fly much fast
among...

OT-Killing Pop-ups as a webmaster by
Jay Honeck
I changed some of the metafiles (or "meta tags") in my website this
afternoon, emphasizing "hotels" more. I did this in an effort to get search
engines to "see" our site more clearly, and (hopefully) move us up a few
notches in the "results".
Well, something worked. Within an hour I had acquired...

On Simulators as assist to IFR training. by
Tman[_2_]
. xoxo.
Anyways, I'm working on my IFR ticket. I'm about 12 hours simulated and
actual instrument time in a real airplane, and able to put in about
another hour in a week. No problem "flying" the plane on the
instruments, but I find that putting everything together often results
in too much...

Manufacturing Quality by
john smith
With the news that Piper will produce the Hondajet, I am wondering if
Piper will be able to produce the finished product to meet Honda's
quality standards.
Piper has not built anything bigger than a Malibu for 20 years.
The Cheyenne IV/LS-400 was the biggest aircraft Piper has produced.

Lessons learned from the Oregon tragedy by

Mr Kim's death resulting from his decision to attempt to walk out of an
area he was unfamiliar with after becoming stranded, raises some thought
provoking questions for aviators.
In years past, this forum has carried several threads on surviving a
crash in a remote area. I behooves us all to...

Did I miss the Era of GA? by
Google Madness
Twenty years ago I almost got into flying, I'd even taken my Discovery
Flight and was all set to dive in. Then my wife-to-be put the kabosh on it
saying it was too much money.
Now money isn't so much an issue anymore and I'm all set once again to
follow my dream of having my PPL.
But, I've heard...

Typical power settings during cruise and other phases of flight by
Mxsmanic
Is it normal to have throttles set to the maximum during cruise, in
small aircraft? I always set them all the way forward because that
seems to get the best speed, and the engine parameters still stay in
the green areas, but I don't know if this is actually a good idea.
Obviously it would be a bad...

absolutely amazed that so few people have...

Instrument rating?? by

I had always planned on getting my instrument rating- within the next
year, probably. But last weekend I had a chat with someone who really
got me thinking about it.
This guy is a friend of a friend and is a retired 20,000 hour ATP.
Retired in the 80s flying 707s and I forget what else. ...
