What is this called? Some sort of sealing for aileron surface

These aileron fences do not help performance. They may help with some other issues:
1) most gliders require counter-aileron while circling. The fences prevent ailerons from being sucked to the upper...

Buying LS3a or ASW20a? ~$25k cross country glider. Which one and why?

The original LS3 have the reputation of a slightly better performance than the LS3a. The LS3 polar measured by idaflieg is about equal to an ASW20. There were several sets of wing molds being used,...

Life glider hours with winch

Hi José,

besides some exceptions (like Blanik or Romanian IS gliders), winch launches do not cause additional limitation of glider life times on top of the usual flight time limits.

Winch...

Borgelt Dynamis variometer

As Mike mentioned, horizontal gusts are usually most disturbing while cruising at higher speeds and entering thermals. The AirGlide S and the ClearNav-Vario are both using ADC derived data to...

Looking for feedback on Beringer Wheel and Disc Brake Kit for LS Gliders

I am not aware of a Beringer kit, but Tost just recently released a disc brake retrofit kit for LS4/6/7/8: https://www.tost.de/news/?lang=en. In this arrangement, the master cylinder is mounted under...

Soaring at Boberg Hamburg Germany???

Hi Craig,

some folks joining us for the 2019 pre-worlds at Stendal were walking through this process and unfortunately, non-EASA licenses are still only validated for a period of 4 consecutive weeks...

flarm mouse or powerflarm

Hi Matt,

besides the slight difference in price (PowerMouse being ~100€ cheaper in the basic version), the only difference of significance seems to be the source for FLARM updates. Any...

Air glide Vario family versus S100 LXNAV - Comments on Winds and Performance?

As others mentioned, the wind calculation from Air Glide is in a class of its own and gives interesting insighta. The vario is on par with for example ClearNav-Vario. I am very happy with this...

Typical glider service lives?

There's a difference between what is technically possible and what is legally allowed. There's an interesting read in the "Schleicher-book": before the 18,000h lifetime extension on the ASK21 was...

IGC to replace FLARM ? ?

Such live tracking systems based on collision avoidance techology already exist for quite a while (Flightradar24, OGN). Since 2017 FLARM based OGN has been used more or less as the standard tracking...

IGC to replace FLARM ? ?

Why put in place a delayed tracking solution besides instant OGN tracking? This is pointless. FLARM is mandatory in contests. Anyone who is interested may use existing FLARM-based OGN tracking...

What magic do the JS3 and Ventus 3 have that the ASG-29 Does not?

From the WGC competition results, I would rather draw the conclusion that the good pilots chose to fly JS3 or Ventus 3 rather than the ASG29. I would not conclude that one model has a clear advantage...

S80- Vario/altimeter setup: Electronic compensation (internalsensors) or TE Probe?

With state of the art variometers, electronic compensation usually only works with a multi- (pitot/static) or triple-probe (TE/pitot/static). If your glider does not have such equipment, you need to...

Now with the AS33, the trend towards higher wing loading continues.

If you have 18m and open class in one competition (which is often the case), tow planes should be capable of towing 60kg/m²...

While announcing the new neo-winglets for the LS8, DG stated that similar improvements to standard class gliders can be achieved through upgrades compared to a completely new development. The...
