The real question is which proportion of the cost is justified by genuine
manufacturing costs, and which is due to broken procurement processes, to
administrative ineptness, and of course to good ol' corporate greed.
The answer would certainly hurt.
The biggest culprits are members of Congress who will fight tooth and nail to
prevent an existing weapons system being manufactured in their state/district
from being shut down due to obsolescence as it means loss of jobs and federal
funds being pumped in.
A favorite method of getting a weapons system approved by Congress was to make
sure all/most of the parts were made in as many states as possible.
