I asked a retired (career) Army friend of mine what the HD could mean,
and his reply is as follows:
"The only thing I can surmise is HD in this context would
mean 'Honorable Discharge'."
Including 'HD' does seem borderline preposterous next to 'Ret.',
particularly for an officer.
