For FAA purposes, I believe the PIC can fly in either control position.
I believe it is legal for the PIC to be in the back seat, but if there
was an incident/accident, I'm sure they would bring out the
careless/wreckless catch all. I believe the regs are set up so a non-PIC
(or non-pilot for the matter) can wiggle the controls at some point in
the flight. How could Dad teach the kids to fly if this were not allowed?
Regs geeks chime in any time. I'm curious about what treasures may be in
there.
I read about a case where an insurance company was refusing an accident
claim (big surprise) where either the PIC was witnessed in the right
seat, or that is where they found the bodies. The insurance company
position was that the PIC was the non-pilot in the left seat and hence,
the insurance was void. Not sure where it ended up.

Can you fly Left seat in a complex airplane if you dont have a complex
singoff in your log book, And have the PIC in the right seat?????
Troll
Well then... for the troll... the PIC can fly in any seat he desires.. front
/ back / left / right .. as long as his insurance company agrees.. just in
case something goes bad..
