Sounds like it might be an overvoltage. The overvoltage spike will trigger
the OV protection locking the alternator off line till you cycle the switch.

Most common cause for ov is low battery water and corrosion in battery c
connections... ie, something that keeps the battery from holding the bus
against current spikes.
