Outlook Express, and I don't think I have changed any settings (on
purpose, that is....who knows what I may have done by accident).

That sometimes appears to happen when you refresh your header list before
the server has actually posted your message. This timing issue seems to
cause a discrepancy between the local message store and the server.
Resetting your local message store usually resolves this issue.

Right click the newsgroup and click Properties. Click the Local File tab
and then click the Reset button. You'll need to re-pull the latest
messages.
