The bolt in the middle of the scissor should be tightened a little.
Then you can lift it from the top without pulling the piston out of
the cylinder

Should we be using DOT-3 automotive brake fluid in your jacks?

No brake fluid ,please.
Just hydraulic oil or oil from automatic hydraulic car gears gears.
