It depends where you're coming from. I tried the AirTrain when it first came
online. I live in Farmingdale about 1/4 mile from the airport and it was
about 50 minutes door to door at a cost of $12. Granted, I have a monthly
train pass with a discount so it would normally be $17. Still not bad.

There is a less expensive option from HPN to JFK by taking the train

Ugh. Taxi to downtown White Plains, Metro North to Grand Central Station,
7 train out to Queens somewhere, transfer to the E to Jamaica, then the

JFK
monorail. I count 4 transfers, and it'll probably take you about 2-1/2
hours by the time you're done.

Let's face it, public transport to and from NYC airports sucks eggs. I
used to fly to London a couple times a year on business. From the

terminal
in Heathrow, it's underground moving walkway to the metro station, then
about 55 minutes (and something like 4 pounds) got me right to my hotel in
Kensington. Or, I could have opted for the express train which would get
me into the central city in about half the time (about 15 pounds, IIRC) on
a more comfortable seat.

In New York, it took them eons to build the new JFK rail link, and it
doesn't even frigging go anywhere.
