I'm playing with a mechanism that involves a piece of nylon rod rotating
inside an aluminum tube. Is lubrication required and if so what kind?

At what RPM. and what kind of loads will be on it?

Actually it will be cycling over an arc of 15º - 20º lateral loads won't
exceed 20 pounds total over a 4 inch length. Longitudinal load is
essentially zero. Cyclic rate won't exceed 5 cycles per second.
