I would file a more direct route without the STAR in the hopes that you
might get it. If ATC gives you the STAR in your clearance, note it for
future reference.

I fly into Boston Logan from SYR about once every two months and I never
file the STAR. So far, I have never received it by name in my initial
clearance, but once I received it as a revised clearance while en route.
