I've had a STAR (CVG) assigned even when I didn't file it, so at least
be prepared to see it in your clearance. I think they provide some
structure to a NORDO approach in busy airspace. In the case where it
happened to me, I received "direct" just before getting to the entry
point on the STAR (was going to a satellite airport, LUK).
