It was there and alive long before that.
And it did have a very, very lively pilot group.

It may be of interest to you that on Compuserve (something like AOL way
back in the 80ies and 90ies; was bought by AOL) the very very first
chatroom was one installed by pilots for pilots.... but that was a
while ago...
