If you can find it, there was a book written in the late 50's or early
60's called Grand Old Lady, Story of the DC-3 that has a lot of stories
of DC-3 "adventures" such as this.


I read such a book. It talked about 100+mph blizzards in the Aleutians
and taking off backwards in same. But the one that really stuck was
the Berlin Airlift Gooney carrying a full load of N sheets of
Perforated Aluminum Planking, for extending the runway in Berlin.

Pilot had a hell of time taxiing out, and barely got off the ground.
After a really hard landing and taxi; they discovered they had
been given N sheets of Perforated *Steel* Planking...
