Any recommendations on where to rent a Skyhawk/Archer-class airplane,
preferrably IFR-equipped, in the area? My research on Airnav did not
bring up too many results, but perhaps there are some locals in this
group who will chime in.
There are two, but they aren't the listed FBOs - the FBOs sell fuel and
services to jets, and Rochester Air Center and Airventure Aviation are
flight schools that rent light planes, sell you charts, all that stuff.

I'll second Peter's recommendations of the Finger Lakes, Letchworth
Canyon, and especially Niagara Falls. Unfortunately I just bought a new
GPS and wiped my old one, so I can't give you the coordinates of the
railway trestle at the south end of Letchworth - it's between a couple of
falls, and it's really the scenic highlight of the park. On your way
there, another cool sight is the wind farm near Perry NY. Just don't
loiter over it, or you'll attract the attention of the TSA.
I don't know if it's still there, but there used to be a pretty decent
aviation museum at Elmira airport (KELM).
