My best guess is that the "rheostat" is actually a potentiometer, and you
removed a ground from one end of the pot so that it cannot swing from +V to
ground.

My suspicion is that the rheostat may be failing.


My suspicion is a loose nut at the end of the screwdriver that installed the
new radios.
