I agree. This guy is, if nothing else, one of the more "interesting" people
I've run across on Usenet. Looking down the now empty threads this guy has
caused is like looking at a suicide. In almost every instance the pattern is
the same; an initial question followed by a response; then a complete
reversal from a questioning mode into an interrogation of the responder from
a position of authority and "superior knowledge. It's a classic Usenet hook!
This character however, seems at least to have an additional aspect to his
Usenet style that might take him right out of the troll category and onto a
higher level......or at least another level :-)
If I had to profile this guy and I had money to lay down, I'd say that what
we have been witnessing here is a guy who over time, and after fooling
around with MSFS, has learned a great deal from the experience, but from his
postings, I'd say that all that "learning" was done alone and without
assistance. The result has been,to my eye anyway, the ultimate development
of a mixed bag of knowledge containing just enough fact to get him into
trouble as the experts begin to expand on what he projects as questions and
comment.
Its interesting to watch :-)
There's another underlying facet to him that I've noticed in his postings.
Assuming he's not a troll in the true sense and just the obnoxious
individual he appears to be, I'm guessing that over time, teaching himself
with MSFS, he has convinced himself that although he can't fly, he COULD fly
if given the opportunity. In fact, based on his responses to those who
actually do fly, I'd say he has convinced himself that since he personally
has obtained all this knowledge without flying an actual airplane, those who
do fly actual airplanes have wasted a great deal of their money and time by
doing so. In other words, I think this guy sees himself on a plane (no pun
intended :-) ABOVE that of real pilots. He sees himself as smarter.
I think he's brought all this to Usenet to "test it" against real pilots. He
engages them with a question, then when they answer, he responds with what
he hopes will be a "hook" to nail them by showing them that he knows more
about the issue he's asking about than the responder.
Its fascinating to watch!!! :-))
Anyway, what makes it a tragedy is the fact that the guy obviously likes
airplanes and has spent a lot of time learning about them. Most of the
pilots who hang on the aviation newsgroups are a great bunch of people and
will gladly help those in the sim community who love aviation and come to
them for real world answers and dialog exchange.
I'm a good example of this myself, having been an advisor to the sim
community for some years now.
Just looking at the empty threads this character has caused tells the whole
story. He has literally run the gamut of the real world aviation talent on
these groups and has burned them all out one by one. He's arrived on the
scene, engaged them all, and generally exhausted his welcome. Its a shame if
it isas I suspect, a personality issue. If he is a troll, he's not a good
one :-)
