It's probably about a 185 nm from San Diego to Bakersfield (depending
upon which airports you are using and what detours ATV might inflict
upon you... Probably 1.5-2 hours depending upon the winds and aircraft
crusing speed, vs about a 4-4.5 hour drive... A quick check over at one
of the flight schools in the San Diego area ended with aircraft rental
rates of $80, $95, and $125 for a C-152, C-172, and new model C-172
respectively... Instructors rent for $45 per hour... If the instructor
can't wait around for you, you're looking at around $500 just to get
there... Of course the kicker is that you'll probably arrive there
quicker in the C-152 than you would with a commercial flight since I
believe that all of the commercial flights go through LAX and take at
least 3 hours to get from San Diego to Bakersfield... Even if you rented
an instructor and aircraft for a one-way flight, it's not totally out of
line pricewise considering what some of the flights from San Diego to
Bakersfield are going for...
