Nobody who has ever used both a TiVo and the free or cheap alternatives
would say that they're "much better". The user interface for MythTV and
your average cable company DVR sucks donkey dongs compared to TiVo. And
a TiVo box is extremely cheap compared to a decent PC to run MythTV on,
which has to be balanced against the $7/month cost of the TiVo service.

This is one of those cases where being an early adopter has its benefits.
I have a Series 1 TiVo with lifetime subscription. I put in a larger hard
drive and ethernet card and now I've got a system with no monthly fee that's
easy to use and works with my DirecTV box. I can "backup" any show, edit
out commercials and burn DVDs. And if I happen to be at work when someone
posts that a cool airplane show is on that night, I use my browser to tell
my TiVo to record it. Yes, I'm a geek.
