I just got hold of an excel spreadsheet from someone, but I don't have

Go to this site:

http://www.openoffice.org/

and download the Open Office suite. It is a free replacement for MS
office and includes spreadsheets.

I have used it with my Linux system for years. Thee are NO
compatibility issues with MS files.

There is a Windows version which I installed on my college student kids'
laptops, rather than pay for the MS office suite.

Consider switching to Fedora or Ubuntu Linux as a complete break from MS.
