Yes, but the period is at least 75 years past the death of the author.
But there is no longer such a thing as renewal.
They've made other changes to allow owners to prevent works from lapsing into
the public domain. The copyright on many of Disney's cartoon characters was due
to expire, and you can be sure the company won't let *that* happen....
