As RomeoMike wrote, I believe it is in the tailcone. I used to teach in a
177RG and we didn't have students actually pump the gear down in training
because the POH requires a check of the fluid if the manual extension is
used and it is a real pain to check. Unfortunately the 177RG I taught in
was just lost a couple of days ago, killing both the instructor and
student. Judging from the picture in the newspaper, I would guess it was
a stall/spin accident while manuevering for landing, but I am not an NTSB
investigator and will have to wait for the report.

I keep reading these stories about low fluid levels and people using
odd fluids, (Ill leave it at that), to replenish and get the gear
down.

I actually don't know where there is a dipstick. I used to fly a 177RG
alot and don't remember
seeing one, but my POH for the plane states that there is a hydraulic
power pack aft of the rear
baggage compartment wall. Try looking there, but the hydraulic
schematic doesn't show a dipstick
anywhere.
