Note the phrasing "British Protectorate". Just who were they
'protecting' it from?

One big difference between a protectorate and a colony was that
anyone born in a colony, including blacks, was automatically
granted full British Citizenship. People born in Egypt were still
Egyptians although things got fuzzy towards the end.
