In Canada, they observe two minutes of silence at 11 AM on Nov 11 as a
memorial to those who have died in battle. They even stop the trains for
two minutes on one of the railroads. You will frequently hear
announcements in stores and businesses just before 11 AM reminding people
of the tradition.

Supposedly, Terry Kelly, a musician, was in a store and observed** a
person ignoring the moment of silence when everyone else was, and wrote a
song about the episode. It became a huge hit.

You can listen to/download/watch the video of the song on the following

I've got a version of that song done by Hank Cramer, a folk singer in the
Pacific Northwest, but hadn't known the specific story behind it. Thanks for
the link.

For other veterans proud of their service, I recommend Cramer's CD, "A Soldier's
Songs" (http://www.hankcramer.com/). I enjoyed his music for ten years before
the liner notes of this album revealed to me that he's also Army Reserve
Lt.Col., and the son of one of the first Green Berets who died in Vietnam. He
traces his own family's tradition military service back to the mid-1700s, and
the album has great versions of songs about the warriors in most of the wars
since then.

Obligatory aviation content: He does a killer version of "Blood Upon the
Risers"....
