It used to be commonplace in the US, up to and including WW2 era.

I'm reading Doolittle's biography and to drum up interest in aviation
the air corp pilots did all kinds of stunts like that. Doolittle
relates of flights over New York City to generate interest in an air
show. Actually ... they were flights THROUGH New York City ... close
enough to the streets that the buildings towered above their planes.

I don't know whether to call that gutz or insanity.


That might have been ok when you only had to worry about trees. But
now you have antennas, guy wires and many other nearly invisible
objects.
