Yup
Flap was the least of his worries.
You -have to- lower the nose to gain flying speed.
A very unnatural thing for the untrained to do with the scenery going
by so close..
I could be wrong as I haven't really studied the tape although I have
seen it several times, but it might very well be that he actually
rotated and sustained deep behind the curve. Lord only knows where his
aft cg was with it packed like it was.
If this was the case, he could very well have been doomed from rotation
if he was so deep that all available power was being used. If he tried
to raise the nose to gain even a foot more of altitude, this would start
a sink rate that only lowering the nose and reducing the AOA would fix.
No altitude to do that and the only outcome would have been the crash.
