PS: What was that awful WWI dogfighting movie
that came out a few years ago? The one that couldn't
hold a candle to Blue Max.....

Do you mean Flyboys -- which pretended to tell the story of
l'Escadrille Lafayette?
It stank at the top of its voice ....

It did.
Even the tongue-in-cheek "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying
Machines" was more convincing.

Which itself was a sequel to "Those Magnificent Men in their
Jaunty Jalopies", IIRC.

Oops ... it's the other way around.
TMMITFM came first (1965), followed by Those _Daring_ Young Men in Their
Jaunty Jalopies (1969). The latter was originally titled Monte Carlo or
Bust -- title changed for distribution in US and Oz.
Both directed by the same fellow, Ken Annakin.
Mr Erskine mentions TGR -- which was about a two-car race.
Jaunty Jalopies was about the first Monte Carlo rally. But both did feature
Tony Curtis as one of the participants.
