I recently learned that the restricted airspace in the SE corner of
Arizona (R-2303) is not in effect during the weekends. Does anyone
happen to know if any of the restricted areas over central New Mexico
(R-5107 -- over the White Sands Missile Range) have a similar policy?

I's been a couple of years since I've dealt with the R5107 White Sands
Restricted Area but this is what I recall. *At that time the southern
section was ALWAYS hot. *There is a northern section (R5701C&H) that
does open on occasion.

Be aware that the German Luftwaffe does intensive low level training
in their Tornado aircraft in this airspace. *It's also worth knowing
that the Spanish called the area "Jornada del Muerto" which translates
something like "dead man walking" or "journey of death". *It isn't
exactly landout friendly country.

You can contact the Holloman AFB tower by phone. *They'll have the
latest info on R5107.

Also some of the German Luftwaffe guys fly with the Alamogordo soaring
club. Give them a call. I bet they know that airspace pretty well.
