This is the first of a series that I posted a couple of years ago and maybe
it's a good time to post them again.

Allen Stening left the sleepy, coastal town of Cowell in South Australia to
join the RAAF in June '41. He trained to fly and was sent to Europe and
eventually shot down in Yugoslavia. His story is told by his wife in
her book ' ''Nab", Memories of a young Spitfire pilot'.


I've been through Cowell a few times, back then it existed as a small gulf
port for the South Australian wheat belt. Generations spent their whole
lives there, raising wheat, putting it into bags and loading it onto small
coastal boats that brought the grain to Adelaide for sale.


For most of the year, it's dry, dusty and quiet - a whole planet away from
the air war in Europe.
