Here's an easy approximation... 40:1 glider
Lay your hand on the sectional.
Measure the distance with your finger width.
Each finger width = 1000' of altitude required -- ie, 3 fingers = 3000'

(Obvious caveats such as glider performance, width of fingers, etc.)
