Hello,
after posting the "Little Ones" series, and before the next one I am
still preparing (among thousands orther things), here is a picture of a
FW 190 replica.
This a/c ditched yesterday in Hyères (south of France - LFTH) during
rehearsal of this week-end's meeting. The motor failed during a
barrel-roll. The pilot flew the a/c to the nearby sea, and landed (? ,
watered ?), touched the sea at nearly 250km/h (135kts). He escaped safe
of the wrecked plane.
We made an emergency landing at a little French Navy airfield called
Hyeres
in 1953 (or maybe 1954). Flew most of the way across the Mediterranean in
a
C-119 trash hauler with a dead starboard engine. As I recall, the end of
our runway
was right on the beach, and the other end ran right into a hill. Maybe I
can
Google Earth for it and see if it's the same place.

I know it isn't "PC" to respond to my own message, but gosh, Googling
sure
turned up a very sophisticated airport! If that's the little French Naval
Air Station
we greased into, there have been major, major changes!
