I believe the working theory is that the Hornet had an engine
flame-out during a slow speed, high alpha pass. The loss and
asymmetry of thrust lead to loss of control of the aircraft.

The thrust nozzles react automatically to engine power, the difference
shows the engines were not at the same thrust; it appears thaat the
starboard engine was the culprit.

Then again, it might have been nargles...
