To quote from World Airline News:
Officially on October 1, 2010 Continental and United Airlines (Chicago)

Although the United name will survive, many observers are lamenting the
loss of this sharp-looking scheme for United Airlines which was
introduced in 2004 and will now be retired. This merger will also end the
long reign of the "U" logo which was first introduced in 1974 in another
form.

Farewell, U... (and before)
I rather liked the current United colors. Then again, the current
Continental colors are pretty too. I just hate the idea of slapping on
UNITED on the aircraft and calling it a day. They really ought to have done
something with a logo or a different font and color for the UNITED text. It
would have made a huge difference.
