No doubt on some level he knew he was making a gamble. *From his post,
he did not have enough information to assess how much of a gamble.
"Looking at it, it did not appear to have damage"? *Was there no AI in
that city he could have called?

Time will tell how much "fun" he will have when he gets into it.
Possessions bring responsibility. My field is littered with derelict
ships and trailers bought by folks who bought said items under time
pressure, or because they thought the price was too good to pass up.
Upon talking to some of them, the main items they did not consider

Am I comfortable flying this ship? One new student was talked into
buying a LAK by his CFIG! *Another student bought a 1-35, both sitting
unused.
Can I afford to do the required maintenance/repairs?
How much will it cost to own, does owning make any sort of financial
sense based on how much I am gong to fly it?

I think if you look around your field, you will find similar ships.
Here, apart from the LAK and 1-35 *there is a Club Libelle, Ventus,
Twin Astir, G-102, *and even more that I cannot recall at the moment.
It is hard when then have not been seen out of the trailer in years.

As for blowing smoke on the 10k and above issue, the asking prices in
W&W are just that, not sales data. *How about a G-103 for 12k WITH
trailer? * That is a real, recent data point. *Here is another data
point, in 2 out of 6 glider title searches, I found liens!

There is no shortage of cheerleaders in this type of situation.
Consider the fact that in the end, that may not be helpful.

Well, if what I have seen with Jantars is any guide, I hope he's had a
good A&P go over it already and has his parts on order, if he's
planning on flying it next spring.
Two to 4 months is common, and that's assuming that they send you the
right ones.
At those hours varioius bearings in the control linkages may become an
issue.
The Jantar isn't that tough to fly, but it is not ergonomically
friendly.
However, if you don't get a good wing runner and she drops a wing
early in the take off roll, it's better to pull the plug than to try
to pick up the wing.
Getting a seat position where you can reach all the instrument
controls takes some experimentation.
Many in our club dislike flying it because of the ergonomics.
They are, however, reasonably robust and seem to be an honest 36 to 1
glide ratio.
Depending on what the A&P says, Lynn may have gotten himself into it
for under 10K.
Not too shabby.
