I will be in Milan later this month on business, and would love to
take a scenic ride/flight in a two-seater on a day off. Anyone know
of operations that are open this time of year within reach of Milano
that offer rental/instruction?

the soaring season is about to start, you may be lucky enough to get
some decent or good thermals.

from Milan:
50km NW, www.acao.it the club in Varese is open almost everyday
(nearly no operation on mo-tue). The fleet includes 3 Duos and 5
ASK21. There's a staff instructor 5 days a week, plus a number of
expert pilots. This is the club with the most members (over 250)

40km N, www.avl.it the club in Alzate Brianza (Como) is probably open
only on fri-sun. Smaller fleet but still worth a visit.

50km NE, http://www.ava-valbrembo.it/ the club in Valbrembo is open
except on mondays. Huge, high value fleet, instructors on site.

60km SW, http://www.avm.it/aeroclub.html the club in Voghera
Rivanazzano uses a hige airport, but has a more modest fleet and (I
believe) is only open on weekends. The Alps are definitely not within
reach, but the mountains in the south are nice and with a good
altitude you watch the sea (Genova).

There may be others, but here you can certainly have a go.
