Default Day 2 Central Calif. Soaring Club Spring Contest

A quick recap of the day for those that couldn't make it.

Mother nature threw a curve ball with some high cirrus moving in from
the south. RASP predictions showed a strong convergence down the
temblor range. At 10:00 the task committee called a task down to
Panorama Pt. and then back up to New Idria for 220 nominal I think.
An alternate MAT task was called with a 1mi turn at Blackwell and then
have at it.

At 12:30 heavy cirrus had filled in from the south. CD Stephen Smith
called a quick consensus building meeting on the grid and we opted to
change the MAT to a first turnpoint at New Coalinga and delay launch
another 45 minutes or so.

Launches got rolling around 1:15 and 18 gliders took to darkening
skies from the southern cirrus. NW it was clear and there were cu
marking the convergence up towards Hernandez Reservoir and EL5 so the
RASP was calling the convergence correctly, but the cirrus was
shutting down the heating to the south just as weatherman Dan Gudgel
had predicted.

Most everyone struggled a little bit at first with only a couple of
thermals working. Those of us at the back of the line launched into
complete overcast conditions and really had to search to find
something worth a start.

New Coalinga ended up being in the center of a very dark area. To the
west the convergence was setting up well with clouds at about 8500.
Various tactics were chosen for getting the first turnpoint. 4 paid
the price of a direct route and ended up on the ground. Several of us
were able to get the first turn and dive into the foothills to get up
in choppy lift and then get us into the convergence. Once connected,
the convergence was working great and the New Idria and Panoche
turnpoints were the way to go as the line was perfectly marked all the
way to Panoche and could be done with few turns.

From Panoche, the top finishers all came back and tagged Old Coalinga
and then returned to New Idria before heading for home. I managed to
link up with Peter Deane and we raced for the last hour within sight
of each other. Great fun trying find some kind of advantage and
watching how our decisions compared.

We shall see what the weather holds for Day 3 and 4. Looking funky.
