On my Android phone I run of course XCSoar.
A fully functional flight computer as a backup, not just a vario.
And my Moto Atrix is very readable in sunlight, even better than my
Ipaq310.
If I need to switch to the Atrix early in flight, I just plug it into
my USB outlet for power, to avoid the battery running out after 2-3
hours.
And finally, I like the larger 4' screen size on the Atrix.

I don't think we are talking about any iphone limitation here. I am also using XCSoar on my Android Dell Streak, but this is not a backup audio vario. By backup I am looking for something else than my current system, in case of total failure (such as dead battery). Or when flying club gliders with no audio vario. The ability to pull out my iphone from my pocket and turn it into an audio vario will be very helpful. And yes, adding audio tone to XCSoar will also be a very nice feature. XCSoar has indeed an option to display a vario (But only in landscape mode from some reason), and adding tone to it will make it more useful.
