Apparently, the folding tips were later dispensed with because:
1 They were not necessary due to increased hangar height in the newer
carriers, and
2 Pilots complained that they were just the right height for banging
their head when exiting the cockpit.

Yes, I see what you mean about the pilots - many of whom were probably
head-bangers in the first place!
