If it's a good clear cover, it has a UV spray on it.
If not, sand it to clear (as low as 140 wet up to 1500 wet) then use a UV cureable to last 5+ years. I do plastic headlight refinishes, so I have a background.

Toothpaste, and others, last a few months......so it goes.......
