Default Want to go fly but "on call"

Text via satellite is one thing (I have no experience in that), but cell is dependent. That I do have some experience in. Northern NJ, decent coverage (Verizon, a few years ago), maybe 5000AGL, sorta flat ground........hit or miss on sending a text in flight. I had to watch the signal strength start coming up, then hit send.
I figured out part of the issue was a CF cockpit, so holding the cellphone above the cockpit rail helped. This was in cruise flight, thermaling may have helped, may have hurt.....

PS, the only reason I did this was I had radio issues and I "wandered off" and nobody knew where I was. I figured a text back to someone at the field at least gave them a direction and intent (last contact with one of our club pilots was 10 miles north of Middletown, NY/home, I was now SW 20 or so miles out from home and continuing out).
