There were actually (and luckily) more war aviation stories like that. Read this about Stanislaw Skalski, a Polish ace, right on the first day of WW2:
"On 1 September 1939 he attacked a German Henschel Hs 126 reconnaissance aircraft, which was eventually shot down by Marian Pisarek. Skalski then landed next to it, helped to bandage wounded crew members and arranged for them to be taken to a military hospital." It is said he also saved the Germans to be lynched by local Polish farmers. Which, BTW, did not prevent him from shooting down several other Nazi war planes in the next few days ...
