Right, the FAA doesn't have any ownership based on contest numbers. However, it's relatively quick to get reasonable numbers off the FAA database if you search by model. For example I came up with ship numbers for three models in just a couple minutes:
SGS 1-26 407
ASW27 136
LAK17 29

These under-report the numbers assimilated by SSA contest numbers, do not include de-registered ones and do not cover Canadian/Mexican aircraft. You can part them out by specific subtypes (Discus2, Discus2a, etc.) and they are grouped by state with sums for each. As always use caution with the FAA data as they sometimes upload inaccurate info (engine/no-engine, etc.).
