Well it did ... but just a cautious envelope expansion, not an all out
100 km or bust.
A 15 second burn during a 2.5 G pull-up, took it from just under 50k
feet (I assume) and 120 knots to Mach 1.2, and then it coasted to 68,000
ft before runing out of energy.
A good flight, and history's first "homebuilt" manned supersonic flight.
