Being used for testing of a new (and very large) engine. The tail on

turboprop test flights.

The RA490 was a trials aircraft for the Metropolitan-Vickers F.2/4 Beryl
axial-flow turbojet engines, as seen here, and was also used with two
Rolls-Royce Nene engines fitted by Westlands

I think this is the deflected-thrust Nene aircraft, because it has the
Mk.8 tail with additional finlets fitted to compensate for the extra
side area of the extended nacelles. It had the standard Mk.4 unit when
testing the Beryls. The Nenes were installed forward of the front spar
and had deflector units between the main spars. In the photo the
rectangular shape can just be made out under the wing.RA490 also has the
outer wings of a PR.10, the nose undercarriage of an NF.11 and the
ventral tank of an NF.12.
