The safety pilot just has to be rated in the category/class being flown.
However, he may not act as PIC if he is not current or does not have a
medical, so the other pilot must be able to act as PIC.


Acting as safety pilot is one of the privileges of a pilot certificate.
Exercising such a privilege requires a current medical certificate,
according to FAR 61.23a.
