Air Force Academy seeing surge in applications

1:19 p.m. January 29, 2004

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – A record number of women have applied to
attend the Air Force Academy despite a year of turmoil because of a
sexual assault scandal.

The academy had received 2,962 applications from women as of Wednesday
– 34 percent more than the 2,212 received a year ago and the most
since the academy began accepting women in 1976. The deadline to apply
is Saturday.

Overall, the 11,838 applications amount to a 14 percent increase over
last year.

Academy officials said patriotism, the ease of online admissions
adopted two years ago and steps taken since the scandal began are
behind the interest.

Academy spokesman Johnny Whitaker said officials hope the surge in
female applicants demonstrates a heightened "trust and confidence" in
the overhaul of cadet training and reporting procedures to prevent
assaults and deal with attackers.
